Lake Forest, Ill. – Dan Rockmore, Chair of Dartmouth College’s Department of Mathematics, will deliver the 24th Annual Volwiler Distinguished Scientist Lecture on Thursday, October 1 at 8 p.m. in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel at Lake Forest College. The speech, titled “The Mathematics of Style” and meant for a general audience, is free and open to the public.

“Professor Rockmore continues the tradition of bringing to Lake Forest top-level scientists and mathematicians who are also gifted expositors,” says Ernest H. Volwiler Professor of Mathematics
Ed Packel.
His lecture will show where science and the humanities come naturally together in exciting new research.
Rockmore describes, “In today's world, almost all aspects of life are brought to the common medium of the computer, it is now possible to quantify and extract the style of an artist via computation. Examples are gleaned from the literary, visual, and dance arts, and include applications to the problem of authentication as well as to the more general problem of quantifying one's personal style. Taken together, this body of work shows just how ‘stylish’ mathematics can be!”
Rockmore has authored and co-authored numerous scientific articles and three technical books mainly around the topic of the theory and application of efficient algorithms for data analysis. He has applied his work to climate modeling, image and signal processing and the design of robust communications schemes. He received his A.B. in Mathematics from Princeton University in 1984 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1989. In 1995, he was one of only 15 scientists to receive a five-year Presidential Faculty Fellowship from the White House for excellence in education and research. He currently serves as the John G. Kemeny Parents Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Computer Science at Dartmouth College, where he has taught since 1991.
The Annual Distinguished Scientist Lecturer is funded by the Ernest H. Volwiler Fund. The Lectureship and the Ernest H. Volwiler Chair in Natural Sciences and Mathematics have been made possible by a gift from the late Dr. Volwiler, formerly chairman of the board at Abbott Laboratories and a trustee of Lake Forest College.
Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 45 states and 69 countries.
