Lake Forest, Ill. – Virginia Grawey '10, currently studying in China through Lake Forest College’s
semester-long program there, is the first student from Lake Forest College to receive a $4,000
Gilman Scholarship to help pay for the cost of studying abroad.
“Since winning the Gilman scholarship, I have gained more confidence in my academic abilities,” says Grawey, who is from Rockford, Ill. “This confidence will help me to set higher goals for my future academic and career endeavors.”
While in China, she will be working at an internship in Beijing, either with an online tourism journal or teaching English. You can
follow her trip on her personal blog.
“Virginia is very articulate,” says Assistant Dean of Faculty for Off-Campus Programs Janet Miller. “And, she wrote a strong essay to win the scholarship. It’s also wonderful to have a student from the College win the prestigious Gilman Scholarship.”
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, this congressionally funded program is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, TX.
Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 45 states and 69 countries.
