news story imageLake Forest, Ill. – Lake Forest College Composer-in-Residence and Associate Dean of the Faculty Rami Levin will have her recent piece, "Lincoln Quintet," for clarinet, string quartet and narrator, performed by members of the North Shore Symphony Orchestra on a concert in honor of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The concert will be held at the Adlai Center for Democracy on July 11 at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information visit: www.stevensoncenterondemocracy.org.

Sen. Adlai Stevenson III, whose father stood alongside composer Aaron Copland for a performance of Copland’s "Lincoln Portrait" in 1964, will narrate the concert. The performance will feature "Lincoln Portait" and one of Copland’s other famous works, "Fanfare for the Common Man."

Levin, who also serves the Director of the Center for Chicago Programs at the College, has written works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo instruments, and chorus. She has had numerous commissions, and performances of her music in the US and abroad. Her orchestral works have been recorded by the Slovak Radio Orchestra and the Warsaw Philharmonic. Dr. Levin has won several awards, including a Fulbright Scholar grant for research and teaching in Brazil in 2008.

The "Lincoln Quintet" was premiered in April by clarinetist J. Lawrie Bloom and the Lincoln Quartet on the Lake Forest Lyrica series. Levin wrote the work in honor of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial. In discussing the upcoming performance Levin writes, "It is always a thrill to hear my music come to life in a performance, and I am delighted that this piece will have its second hearing at such a prestigious event."

Senator Stevenson will also talk about the Stevenson family's unique connection to Abraham Lincoln: it was Stevenson's great-great-grandfather who conceived the idea of the Lincoln-Douglas debates and who helped convince Lincoln to run for the presidency.
