Lake Forest, Ill., - The Garrick Players present
The Gas Heart a Dadaist classic written by Tristan Tzara and directed by one of Chicago’s hottest young directors Sean Graney. The production will open on Wednesday, April 22 and run through Sunday, April 26 with evening performances at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Performances will be held in the Allan Carr Theater in Hixon Hall on the College’s South Campus.
Tzara himself called the play “the greatest three-act hoax of the century,” and Sean Graney has directed the play in the “promenade” style, meaning that there are no seats and the audience gets to wander around and intermingle with the actors. While the original text is nonsensical, director Sean Graney has overlaid the story of the rise, success, and death of Dadaism to make the play more accessible to an audience.
Sean Graney is a professional director from Chicago whose recent credits include
The Hairy Ape, as a part of the Eugene O’Neill festival at the Goodman Theatre,
Edward II at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and
What the Butler Saw at Court Theatre. Graney is also a founding member and the artistic director of the Hipocrites Theater Company in Chicago as well as an accomplished playwright.
