Lake Forest, Ill. – Michael Patrick Fiske ’10 has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2009 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. Michael, a biology major, plans to seek a Ph.D. in molecular neuroscience and pursue a career in academic medicine with a focus on neural stem cells and their medical applications.
“Earning an honorable mention is a high achievement,” said Professor of Biology Shubhik DebBurman. “No one has received even an honorable mention in our recent history. So, this probably a first for us. It’s like getting honorable mention for a National Science Foundation pre-doctoral fellowship; graduate programs treat that just as honorific as getting it.”
The 278 Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,097 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
Goldwater Scholars have very impressive academic qualifications that have garnered the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 73 Rhodes Scholarships, 102 Marshall Awards (7 of the 40 awarded in the United States in 2009), and numerous other distinguished fellowships.
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S Senate.
Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 47 states and 69 countries.
