Byron Hurt to discuss interpersonal violence 3/19
Lake Forest, Ill. – Byron Hurt, a nationally recognized and respected lecturer, will deliver a lecture on March 19 that will begin at 7 p.m. and will take place in the Mohr Student Center.

Hurt’s presentation is based on his most recent documentary, Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, which premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and called “one of the best documentary films in 2007” by the Chicago Tribune. Hip Hop was selected to appear in more than 50 film festivals worldwide and Hurt challenges his audiences to examine the damaging effects of patriarchy, racism, and sexism in American culture.

Hurt is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, a published writer, and anti-sexist activist. In addition, Hurt has served as a long-time gender-violence educator. He is a founding member of the Mentors in Violence Prevention program, the leading college-based rape and domestic violence initiative for college and professional athletics. He has lectured at hundreds of campuses, numerous professional conferences, and trained young men and women on issues related to gender, race, violence, music, and visual media.

Hurt’s lecture is part of the inauguration of the Sexual Assault Prevention Program at the College. In addition to Hurt’s presentation, the program has organized the Clothesline Project, an effort to increase awareness of sexualized violence. Certain colors on decorated t-shirts represent different forms of sexualized violence, and the shirts are hung on a clothesline in remembrance of victims and survivors of sexualized violence.

The events associated with the SA Prevention program are co-sponsored by the Gates Center for Leadership, Students for Women’s Awareness Network, Office of Intercultural Relations, and the Department of Athletics.

Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 45 states and 69 countries.
