His work on the translational human stem cell research and regenerative medicine is known around the world, and he has written over 200 articles, reviews, and book chapters on this topic. His research is currently funded by five major National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants.
His laboratory focuses on the biology of embryonic stem cells and neural stem cells. Although the principal focus of these studies is on definition of mechanisms underlying stem cell differentiation, a significant effort is also devoted to applying molecular neurobiology to clinical problems. His lab is developing techniques for the treatment of spinal cord injury and stroke.
Dr. Kessler received his B.A. from Princeton University, his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, and he performed his medical residencies in neurology at Mt Sinai Hospital and New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center.
