Lake Forest, Ill. – A scurrilous rumor circulating for the last 300 or so years suggests that Molière is dead, the victim of a coughing seizure amid the performance of his final play,
The Imaginary Invalid. But Molière is alive and better than ever, and performing under the name Timothy Mooney. In fact, he’s coming to Lake Forest College, on September 11 at 8 p.m. to perform
Molière Than Thou. This time he speaks English, but he’s every bit as insightful, ribald, irreverent, and enthusiastic as the first time around.
The performance will take place in the Allan Carr Theater,
Hixon Hall, on the College’s South Campus. For more information, please call 847-735-6112 or go to Mooney’s
Web site.
Mooney’s affinity with Molière goes well beyond this manic performance of ten of the French scribe’s monologues. Mooney has also adapted fifteen of Molière’s plays in their entirety, bringing a strong command of the English language to these works.
Molière Than Thou reveals an author who can stand toe-to-toe with Shakespeare, reeling off brilliant couplets late into the night.
In the course of his one-man play, Timothy Mooney seduces the audience with a complexity of language that is a sensual delight. Parading through the best-loved plays of France’s history,
Molière Than Thou reinvigorates seventeenth-century French theatre, the court of Louis XIV, and the vision that generated some of the most beloved plays of all time.
The show won a “Best of” award from the San Francisco Fringe Festival, and was listed first of the “Top Ten Artistic Events of 2006” from the Chattanooga Pulse. The New York media exclaimed, “Move over Richard Wilbur, Timothy Mooney is the real deal … A very tight performance which should be seen by any aspiring actor who wants to tread the boards.”
No reservations are required for this free event, and guests will be seated on a first-come-first-served basis.
Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 45 states and 68 countries.
