Two students receive honors for research in biology at annual neuroscience conference
Lake Forest, Ill. – Lake Forest College students Stephanie Valtierra ’08 and Alexandra Ayala ’09 received Second Prize and Honorable Mention, respectively, at the Chicago Society for Neuroscience conference held in March.

Eighteen undergraduate scholars of neuroscience presented work performed at colleges and universities in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin, including Lake Forest, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, University of Illinois at Chicago, Depaul University, and Loyola University.

“For Stephanie,” says Associate Professor of Biology Shubhik DebBurman, “doing well at the conference was no fluke, as she had won the First Prize among undergraduates last December at the American Society of Cell Biology's international meeting in Washington, D.C.”

Lake Forest biology students have won one or more prizes each year for the past six years of this undergraduate neuroscience research competition in Chicago. All eight award winners to date have headed to M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D. programs or are currently preparing for such a program, according to DebBurman.

Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 45 states and 65 countries.
