Biology professor Anne Houde receives $200,000 research grant

news story image Lake Forest, Ill. - Anne Houde, Foster G. and Mary W. McGaw Professor in the Life Sciences at Lake Forest College, received a four-year, $206,346 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to further her research in guppy mating. Houde has received three previous NSF grants and several NSF supplements, all related to her more than 20 years of investigating the mating choices of the small fish.

Houde will direct the project, titled "Collaborative Research/RUI: Behavioral and Genetic Mechanisms for Frequency-Dependent Survival and Mating Advantage in Guppies," with F. Helen Rodd, of the University of Toronto. Kimberly Hughes, of the University of Illinois, will also collaborate.

In recent years, Lake Forest College faculty members have received grants from institutions such as the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation, as well as from a variety of private foundations. During the current academic year, the College so far has been awarded research and program support of almost $1.3 million.

Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 45 states and 65 countries.
