Global Warming, Arctic Culture, and the Alaskan Wilderness
news story imageLake Forest, Ill. - Lake Forest College welcomes arctic explorer, author, and photographer Jon Waterman to campus on Wednesday, March 19. Waterman will deliver a lecture titled "Global Warming, Arctic Culture, and the Alaskan Wilderness" at 7:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Call 847-234-3100 for more information.

In 2006, National Geographic sent Jon Waterman north to investigate warming in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, along with several college students and the legendary field biologist, George Schaller (his 1956 study created the original wildlife range). While conferring with Alaskan scientists studying climate change and oil development, the expedition discovered melting permafrost, unnatural predation of nesting birds, brushed-over tundra, disappearing glaciers, and dying forests.

Waterman will discuss the expedition and the subject of global warming with objectivity and scientific credibility. Waterman is the author of nine books including Where Mountains Are Nameless; Passion and Politics in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Arctic Warming.

The First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest is located at 700 North Sheridan Road at the intersection of Sheridan and Deerpath roads and is accessible via Metra. Sponsored by the Lake Forest College Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth and the Student General Assembly.
