Biology Seminar Series: Dr. Bala Chandran 11/14
Manipulation of Host Cells by Kaposi’s Sarcoma Associated Herpes Virus: Survival by a Successful Pathogen
Lake Forest, IL – Dr. Bala Chandran, long-time researcher of the molecular biology of the herpes virus, will deliver a public lecture at Lake Forest College on Wednesday, November 14, at 4:15 pm.
Aimed at a general audience, Dr. Chandran’s presentation titled “Manipulation of Host Cells by Kaposi’s Sarcoma Associated Herpes Virus: Survival by a Successful Pathogen” will be held in Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall. The public is welcome to attend free of charge. A pre-seminar reception will be held at 4:00 pm. Please call 847-735-6010 for more information.
Dr. Chandran is Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology; and Director of the H.M. Bligh Cancer Research Laboratories at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. He received his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Madurai, India and his Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. He conducted his postdoctoral work at Cancer Research Group, McMaster University, Canada, where he studied the Envelope glycoproteins of the Herpes Simplex 2 Virus. He was hired as an assistant professor by the Department of Microbiology, Molecular Genetics and Immunology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he later was promoted to full-professor before moving to his current position at Rosalind Franklin University.
Bala Chandran’s lab is working to define the molecular events of infection of target cells by Kaposi’s sarcoma associated herpes virus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8), is a newly identified herpes virus. This virus is implicated in the etiology of Kaposi's sarcoma primary effusion lymphoma and of multicentric Castleman’s disease. Dr. Chandran’s lab focuses on how KSHV manipulates the host cell for a successful infection, with the goal of understanding KSHV pathogenesis and developing novel methods to control KSHV infection.
Among his numerous honors are Recipient of Director General of Health Services Fellowship by the Government of India; the Junior Investigator Recognition Award from the School of Medicine, University of Kansas Medical Center; and the Excellence in teaching Award, University of Kansas Medical Center. He is an editorial board member of the Journals of Virology and of Human Virology, and he has served on numerous NIH study panels in his area of expertise.
The event is sponsored by the Lake Forest College Biology Department, and the Center for Chicago Programs.
