Two days, 484 students, 190 topics: Steven Galovich Memorial Student Symposium 4/9-4/10
Highest student participation levels ever highlight 10th annual event

news story imageNearly 500 students will participate in Lake Forest College’s 10th Annual Steven Galovich Memorial Student Symposium April 9 – 10, 2007. The Symposium provides students with an opportunity to share their scholarly research and creative projects to the College community through presentations, exhibits, debates, performances, demonstrations, and posters. Topics span illegal immigration, Lake Forest College values, and bird migration research, to a performance of Asian cultural traditions, forensic fingerprinting demonstrations, and a hands-on brain exhibit.

“The day is a testament to our diverse intellectual achievements and strong collaboration between faculty and students both inside and outside the classroom,” said Symposium Chair Shubhik DebBurman, associate professor of biology.

Sessions will occur in venues across campus, including the Donnelley and Lee Library, Mohr Student Center and Stuart Commons, Hotchkiss Hall, Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, Durand Art Institute. All sessions are free and open to the public. For a full schedule of events, view the program online.

Two new traditions will highlight the 2007 Symposium:

April 9, Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, 8 p.m.
Danielle Allen, University of Chicago Professor and Dean of Humanities, will open the symposium with the Ruth Winter Community Lecture entitled "On Democracy and Knowledge." The lecture, which is part of the Sesquicentennial Lecture Series, follows the 4 p.m. opening of the student art exhibit at Durand Art Institute.

April 10, Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, 4:30 p.m.
The Red & Black Closing Ceremony will feature the best student work of the year. Four student scholars -- chosen by a committee of faculty, students, and staff -- will present on topics that range from the sciences, education, history, and foreign language.

The symposium was renamed after Dean of Faculty, Provost, and Professor of Mathematics Steven Galovich after he passed away unexpectedly in December 2006. Professor Galovich proposed the idea of a student symposium a decade ago to highlight his passion for the academic work of students. He believed that Lake Forest College should devote a day during the academic year to showcase students and their research. The annual event is now an integral part of the College.
