
Lake Forest, Ill.- Danielle Allen, dean of the division of humanities, professor of classics and political science, and a member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago, will deliver the Ruth Winter Community Lecture at Lake Forest College on Monday, April 9 at 8 p.m. Her talk titled “On Democracy and Knowledge” will be held in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel. A renowned scholar on Greek literature and political philosophy Dr. Allen’s talk will return to the age-old argument between Plato and Aristotle over whether democratic citizens can know enough to govern themselves well.
Awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2001, Allen holds two doctorates – one in government and political theory from Harvard University and the other in classics from King's College, University of Cambridge. She is the author of two books; her most recent
Talking to Strangers: Anxieties of Citizenship Since Brown vs. the Board of Education (Chicago, 2004) takes the events in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957 as a starting point for an analysis of democratic politics. Her previous book,
The World of Prometheus: the politics of punishing in democratic Athens (Princeton, 2001), was widely reviewed and praised, and she has authored dozens of articles on Plato, Aristotle, oratory, tragedy, archaic poetry, democratic theory and practice, rhetoric, and political metaphor. Her interests span Athenian democracy, democratic theory, ancient philosophy, and ancient and modern poetics. Among her many awards and recognitions, Allen was honored in 2000 with the Quantrell Award for Excellence in Teaching by the University of Chicago, and in 2004 was named to Crain’s Chicago Business list of “40 Under 40.”
The Ruth Winter Community Lecture is made possible through the generosity of the late Ruth Winter, who worked at the College from 1953 to 1973 as the director of cultural affairs. She brought many internationally renowned lecturers to the College during her 20 years of service.
