Celebrating the publication of the 2007 edition of Eukaryon with a special seminar by Professor of Biology Anne Houde
news story imageLake Forest, Ill. - The Department of Biology at Lake Forest College is pleased to announce the publication of the third edition of the online research journal Eukaryon. The 2007 edition will be available on the College’s Web site on Wednesday, February 21. A campus reception celebrating the students’ work will take place at 4 p.m. on the first floor of the Donnelley and Lee Library followed by a “Science for the Public” lecture by noted biologist Anne Houde at 4:30 p.m. For more information call 847-735-6010.

Dr. Anne Houde, a nationally regarded evolutionary biologist and Lake Forest College professor, will present her acclaimed research on the mating behavior of guppies titled “Polymorphism Persists: How Guppies Got Such Different Spots.” The public is welcome to attend free of charge.

Eukaryon is an undergraduate research journal that publishes the very best of life science scholarship conducted by Lake Forest students. The journal’s goal is to celebrate and highlight the academic accomplishments achieved by these students within the research-rich classrooms and student-centered research labs of Lake Forest College faculty. The word “Eukaryon” reflects the diversity of organisms that the faculty of the biology department are involved with through their scholarship.

A student editorial board comprised of biology students reviews submissions, copy edits, and publishes the journal annually. The board also authors all editorial policies of the journal, with the goal of making Eukaryon a true student-produced publication that maintains high scientific journalistic standards.

"Eukaryon is one of the few undergraduate life science research journals published by a liberal arts college to highlight student scholarship. It not only is a wonderful showcase of high quality research conducted by Lake Forest College students, it also illustrates our ethos of active engagement in student-faculty collaborative scholarship." says Dr. Douglas Light, chair of the biology department.

The 2007 issue is distinguished by its higher selectivity, wider diversity of scientific topics published and record number of submissions. The published student work stems from a variety of science courses (first-year studies to advanced senior seminars and senior theses), along with articles that highlight scholarly engagement of students in off-campus experiences, professional conferences, and the design of innovative courses. The authors include freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, recent graduates, and biology majors and non-majors. The diversity of articles reflects the breadth and depth of scientific writing that biology faculty regularly engage students in within their courses.

Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 47 states and 55 countries.
