Brain Awareness Week 2006
Unraveling the Mysteries of the Mind
Lake Forest, Ill. - Brain Awareness Week at Lake Forest College is an annual event that includes informational sessions for the College community and public lectures. This educational community outreach event is the collaborative effort of students and faculty at Lake Forest College studying Brain, Mind, and Behavior.

In addition to the November 8 keynote address “How our Hands Help us Think” the public is welcome to attend these and other events for Brain Awareness Week.

Monday, November 6
4:00 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall (3:30 pre-seminar reception)
“Dyslexia and the Brain: Prediction and Intervention in Infancy”
The opening lecture is presented by Dr. Dennis Molfese, Distinguished University Scholar at the University of Louisville. He serves as a professor in the Birth Defect Center and the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Craniofacial Biology at Louisville. He is a developmental neuropsychologist who explores developmental changes in the brain across the lifespan. Of particular interest, he has pioneered techniques to detect dyslexia in infancy by examining portions of an infant's electrophysiological signal (EEG). Currently, Dr. Molfese holds major grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the National Institute of Health, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He has written or edited 6 books and published over 120 journal articles and book chapters.

Brain Anatomy 101
The community is invited for a hand-on exploration of the human brain, including exhibits on how our brain helps us sense, move, learn, sleep, emote, and think.

Wednesday, November 8
4:00 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall (3:30 pre-seminar reception)
“How our Hands Help us Think”
Presented by Dr. Susan Goldin Meadow, Beardsley Ruml Distinguished Service Professor in psychology at the University of Chicago, and leading expert on language creation and gesture’s role in communication.

Thursday, November 9
7:00 p.m. in McCormick Auditorium
A Beautiful Mind
Multiple Oscar- winning biopic of the meteoric rise of John Forbes Nash Jr., a math prodigy able to solve problems that baffled the greatest of minds and how he overcame years of suffering through schizophrenia to win the Nobel Prize.

Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 47 states and 55 countries.
