Biology Seminar Series: Yeast as small mad cows 10/25
Lake Forest, Ill. - Dr. Susan Liebman, a world authority on prions, will deliver a public lecture at Lake Forest College on Wednesday, October 25 at 4 pm.

Aimed at a general audience, Dr. Liebman’s presentation titled “Yeast as small "mad cows” demonstrate protein-based inheritance” will be held in Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall. The public is welcome to attend free of charge. A pre-seminar reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Please call 847-735-6010 for more information.

Dr. Liebman is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received her B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, M.A. in biophysics from Harvard University, and PhD from the University of Rochester. Her research uses the simple eukaryote, yeast and focuses on the most unusual class of proteins called prions. They have only been discovered recently, but one of them is already well known as the cause of mad cow disease. The Liebman lab investigates both how prions form and the many important and positive roles they play in biological processes, including their ability to serve as “genes”, previously thought to be the exclusive realm of DNA and RNA. Dr. Liebman has published over 80 scientific articles on this topic.

Dr. Liebman was the recipient of a National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award. She has served as a member of the American Cancer Society's Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis study section, the NIH Biomedical Sciences study section, and as a frequent “ad hoc” reviewer on NIH study sections. Liebman is a member of the “Current Genetics” editorial board.

The event is sponsored by the Lake Forest College Biology Department, and the College's Center for Chicago Programs.
