Panel discussion precedes gallery opening of “Location Uncertain: Chicago-Berlin”

Lake Forest, Ill. - Lake Forest College will be one of two Chicago-area venues to showcase the art exhibition “Location Uncertain: Chicago-Berlin.” The exhibition opened in the Sonnenschein Gallery on August 31 and runs through October 1. Gallery hours are 2:30 - 5:00 p.m. daily including weekends. Call 847-735-5181 for more information.
The exhibition includes work by Lake Forest College art faculty Tom Denlinger and Karen Lebergott. They are among nine artists from Chicago and Berlin who will show work in a variety of media. The other artists from Chicago are Mary Patten and Michael Piazza, and from Berlin Jan Bauer, Werner Gasser, Helga Natz, Karina Nimmerfall, and Daniela von Nayhauss.
The purpose of this international exchange is to develop ways for artists from different cultural and geographical places to work together collaboratively. An initial exhibition in this exchange, titled “Location Matters,” took place in Berlin between November, 2005 and February, 2006. This show offered a chance for all the artists to meet and get to know one another’s work. Through this interaction new possibilities for cultural exchange presented themselves and resulted in a deeper commitment to build upon the artists’ ongoing dialogue.
The exhibition at Lake Forest College’s Sonnenschein Gallery will highlight each individual artist’s work, and the collaborative pieces will open simultaneously at the Altgeld Gallery of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb (this exhibition will open August 29, and remain through Dec 16, 2006).
The issues addressed in this exchange between Chicago and Berlin artists include both questions of collaboration and culture. Questions include how artists can achieve a significant connection without compromising their individual sensibilities and processes. And equally important, how does work from a specific cultural space translate elsewhere given the distinct historical and social makeup of that place?
These issues will be explored during the panel discussion with the artists, moderated by Susan Funkenstein, art history professor at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside who specializes in modern German art. Lake Forest College faculty Tom Denlinger and Karen Lebergott organized this international exchange of artists, which is funded in part by the Global Partners Project of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest.
Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,400 students representing 47states and 54 countries.
