
Lake Forest, Ill. - Dr. Patricia Spear, a world authority on virology and the biology of infectious diseases, will deliver a public lecture at Lake Forest College on Wednesday, March 22 at 4 p.m.
Aimed at a general audience, Dr. Spear’s presentation titled “Herpes Simplex Virus: What determines which cell types it can invade” will be held in Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall. Dr. Spear is the Guy and Anne Youmans Professor of Microbiology-Immunology at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. She conducts research on entry mechanisms of herpes simplex virus (HSV) into cells and virus-induced cell fusion. Dr. Spear has written more than 250 journal articles, reviews, and book chapters. She holds two patents and serves on the editorial board of the journal
Virology.
Among her numerous honors, Dr. Spear is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Microbiology, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. She received the Pasteur Award from the Illinois Society for Microbiology, a Yamagiwa-Yoshida Memorial International Cancer Study Grant, and a U.S. Public Health Service Research Career Development Award.
The event is sponsored by the Lake Forest College Biology Department and its Beta Beta Beta chapter (national undergraduate biology honorary).
