Financial Aid > United World College

This page will provide the information you will need if you are current student from or graduate of a United World College insitution.  All figures on this site are reported in U.S. dollars.

Lake Forest College is committed to providing generous assistance to you, if your family is unable to pay the full cost of a college education.  In recent years, scholarship funds offered to United World College students have ranged from $29,000 to $37,000 (U.S.) per person.  Your financial aid is continued at a similar level each year (including a modest increase) if your performance is consistent with the standards of the College.  In addition, most students are also able to work on campus, earning additional funds to help pay the cost of room and meals, or for personal expenses.

Types of Financial Aid

Scholarships offered to students from the UWC program include the Davis United World College Scholarship and the Global Enrichment Scholarship.  Both are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.  Funds may only be used in the fall and spring semesters.

All scholarships are renewable contingent on continuous, full-time enrollment at the College or an approved off-campus program.  Recipients must achieve a 2.5 GPA after the first year and maintain a 2.75 GPA thereafter.  Recipients must also meet with either the Director of International Admissions or the Director of International Studies in the middle of the spring semester each year.

Loans* are available to many international students.  If you have a credit-worthy co-signor who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident use the International Student Loan Program from the International Education Finance Corporation (www.IEFC.com, 781-843-5334).  Follow the instructions on the web site.  If you are Canadian, you are encouraged to contact the Student Financial Assistance branch of your provincial government to see if they offer a loan for students.

Work-Study* is a part-time job on campus.  It is normally offered if you show financial need and have proper visa status.  While students with F-1 status may work up to 20 hours per week when classes are in session, most students work 8-12 hours per week.  You are paid on an hourly basis, and a check is given to you every two weeks for the hours you worked.  While we do not guarantee that you will earn the full award, most students are offered up to $2000 (U.S.) in work-study funds.

* If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident attending a UWC institution, the loans and work-study funds you may qualify to receive are different from those listed above.  Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for details.

More About the Application Process

If we have received your application(s) for financial aid and/or scholarship by the time you are admitted to the College, you will receive a Financial Aid Announcement with your letter of admission. This Announcement will identify the grant, scholarship and work-study funds you qualify to receive.

If you accept the College's offer of admission, you must also complete a "Certification of Finances" form, which is provided by the Office of Admissions at the time of your admission.

If "work-study" appears on your Financial Aid Announcement, a work-study application will be available to you in May, and must be completed by July 1.
