Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) PIN
Most Lake Forest students will need two PINs in the application process: a federal student aid PIN for the FAFSA and a Lake Forest PIN for the LFAFA. At least one parent also needs his/her own PIN for the FAFSA.
The FAFSA must be properly signed…in most cases by both the student and one parent. Applications E-signed by a PIN are processed faster.
A PIN is assigned to you by the U.S Department of Education for use in the process of applying for financial aid. With a PIN are are able to:
- access your financial aid application (FAFSA) data
- electroncially sign the FAFSA
- make corrections to the FAFSA at a later time
- access your financial aid history
- access and electronically sign your federal loan master promissory note, deferment and forbearance forms
Apply for a PIN
Go to www.pin.ed.gov
How to sign the FAFSA with your PIN
- Go to the FAFSA website, www.fafsa.gov and log in.
- Click on the box “Provide Signatures” in the middle of the screen.
- Click “Sign Electronically With My PIN” and follow the prompts until you see the confirmation page.
Some notes about your PIN
- The student and his/her parent must have separate PINs.
- Students and parents may apply for a PIN at any time…even before the FAFSA is completed, and before start-up of FAFSA processing each Jan 1.
- Parents may use the same PIN for FAFSAs of different children
- Once you are assigned a PIN it is yours for life.
- You may change your PIN to a number you find easy to remember.
- If you cannot obtain a PIN, an alternative paper method is usually available (ex: at the end of the FAFSA on the Web, from the Office of Financial Aid, or Direct Loan Servicing Center). Print, sign and mail that page to the appropriate party.
