The Granada Semester Program

The Granada Semester Internship Program, sponsored by Lake Forest College in conjunction with IES (International Education of Students), aims to provide students with an in-depth exposure to Spanish society and culture through a combination of classroom instruction and work experience. It is conducted during the 15-week fall semester from early September to mid-December. The curriculum takes advantage of its location in Andalusia with such courses as: Islamic Art and Architecture of Spain; Images of Women in Mediterranean Film; and Lorca and the Andalusian Literary Tradition – all of which are taught in Spanish. The students will enjoy the Northern African influence in Southern Spain, as well as the rich cultural presence of Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Granada is also the home of the flamenco dance and boasts the magnificent palaces of the Alhambra and quaint medieval streets.

Students will enroll in courses at the IES Center in Granada and at The University of Granada, the third largest university of Spain. Participants will also gain international work experience through the internship program. A few examples of the sectors represented in the internships include: Cultural Management, Education, Social Services, International Relations, Applied Economics and Tourism.  A homestay in a Spanish family, arranged by the director in Granada, will complete this full immersion experience.

To qualify, students must demonstrate Spanish language proficiency (through Spanish 212 or its equivalent), and a solid academic background in their major field(s). Applicants are normally expected to have a B minus average (GPA). In Granada, students will earn letter grades (A/B/C/D/F) for courses and for the internship.

Fees include regular Lake Forest College full-semester tuition and a program fee that covers room, partial board in Granada and activity/excursion fees. All Lake Forest College financial aid will apply.

The fifteen-week program includes:

  • A  300-level language course, Intensive Advanced Spanish (8 semester hours)
  • An internship placement in combination with an internship seminar (5 semester hours)
  • An area studies elective course, taught in Spanish (3 semester hours) **

** For an additional fee of $215 USD, students may choose to pursue an independent study option in place of the elective course.

Excursions include tours and course-related field study within Granada as well as field trips to: Cordoba, Sevilla-Ronda, Cabo de Gata National Park, Morocco and Gibraltar, all led by an IES Abroad representative.

Applicants must complete all required documents for both Lake Forest College and IES. The first campus deadline  is November 15 of the year preceding participation.  A College committee  will interview candidates and select  participants.
