Sociology and Anthropology Major
Majors will complete nine courses in the department. A grade of C or better must be earned in all courses counted toward the major. Students start with SOAN 110 followed by two gateway courses SOAN 210 and SOAN 220 and two methods courses SOAN 310 and 320. All students who don’t write a thesis must complete a capstone course: SOAN 480. Besides these required courses students must take three elective courses of their choice in the department, one of which must be at the 300 or 400 level. Students who want to write a thesis must also take a not-for-credit workshop as a co-requisite.
Majors planning graduate studies in sociology, anthropology, social service, or social policy are urged to take courses in foreign languages, mathematics, computer science, and statistics.
The department takes special interest in encouraging senior thesis work leading to the degree with honors in the major.
