Sociology and Anthropology

Although sociology and anthropology arose from two traditions, they are engaged in a common endeavor. Studies in the department are directed toward the discovery of general principles that help explain similarities and contrasts in human social behavior. To this end, work in the department centers on the comparative analysis of human societies. We emphasize study of both modern and premodern societies, including issues of contemporary social policy.

Introduction to Sociology and Anthropology (Sociology and Anthropology 110) serves as the prerequisite for most higher-level courses. Courses at the 100 level are designed for first- and second-year students. Juniors and seniors are admitted without prerequisite to most 200-level courses with consent of the instructor.
