Planning your Pre-Veterinary Curriculum

Most veterinary schools have a more extensive set of science requirements than do medical schools; so be sure to look particularly at the veterinary schools in which you are interested early in your college career.  If there is a veterinary school in your state of residence, look into that one first.

For example, the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine lists:

  • 8 semester hours of biological sciences with laboratories
  • 16 semester hours of chemical sciences, includiong biochemistry; inorganic and organic chemistry must have laboratories (3 laboratories required)
  • 8 semester hours of physics with laboratories.

Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements (VMSAR)

  • The publication Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements (VMSAR) contains admission requirements and contact information for all 32 U.S. and Canadian veterinary medical colleges, as well as the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh.  VMSAR provides an overview of the application and enrollment processes along with specific information on each of our member colleges.
