Requirements for the Islamic World Studies Minor


A total of six courses are required for the IWS Minor.

All students are required to take the following core courses:

  • Introduction to Islamic Cultures and Civilizations: HIST (RELG) 207 (this is the gateway course that is the prerequisite for all other IWS courses.
  • History of Contemporary Islamic Societies in the Middle East: HIST (ISLM) 316
  • Introduction to Islam: RELG (ISLM) 213

These core courses must be taken by the end of the student’s junior year.

Additional Requirements

  • Once a student has taken the first of the above three courses [HIST (RELG) 207] that is also identified as the IWS gateway course, s/he can start taking elective courses toward fulfilling the IWS minor.
  • Students must take at least three elective courses from the approved list of Islamic World Studies dedicated courses (provided below).
  • One of the elective courses may be from the second tier IWS-related courses – that are not directly about the Islamic world but contain a significant portion that relates to this area.

Language Study

IWS minors are encouraged to take Arabic, although this is not a requirement.

Students who intend to participate in our Tunisia Study Abroad Program (in the process of development) will be required to complete one year of Arabic.
