International Relations

A student majoring in international relations is concerned with the approaches by various disciplines—politics, history, economics, sociology, and psychology—to problems that are global in scope, e.g., war and peace, development and underdevelopment, imperialism and national self-determination. The student will be prepared for positions in international affairs in the federal and state governments, and positions with international institutions, such as the specialized agencies of the United Nations and various international businesses. The major is a base for social service positions at the national and international levels, e.g., the Peace Corps and church groups. Majors often go on to graduate school in political science, law, or business administration.
