Department of English

The Department of English offers courses central to liberal arts education, not only for English majors but also for other students who wish to enrich their understanding of literature and language and to develop their skills as readers and writers. These are skills essential to leading constructive and imaginative lives. They also provide preparation for careers in law, teaching, publishing, advertising, communications, business—for any work that requires the ability to read, to write, and to think well. The department provides a range of courses for all students in the College. Writing courses include English 100, 231, 235, 242, 330,  332, 360, and 361 (some writing courses require the submission  of a writing sample to the instructor). Literature courses designed for first-year students include English 110 (designed for first-year students and prospective majors) and many 200-level courses. With the exception of 100 and First-Year Studies, all English courses are open to upperclass  students of all majors.
