New K-12 Visual Art Certification Program Approved

In December 2007, Lake Forest College’s Education Department, in collaboration with the Art Department, received approval from the Illinois State Board of Education for an undergraduate teacher education program for a Type 10 certificate with an endorsement in Visual Art. The Type 10 certificate enables teacher candidates to prepare for a career in K-12 classrooms.  The Education Department faculty members will oversee the development of teachers in close partnership with content area faculty.

Previously, art majors had the option to certify at the elementary school level and also earn a middle school endorsement in art education. The new program will provide credentials for art majors to work at any level, K-12,  as specialists in visual art.

In fall 2008, the first student to take advantage of this program will participate in a new course, EDUC 305: Teaching in the Elementary School. This course parallels EDUC 306: Teaching in the Middle School, the course offered to elementary teacher candidates who want to add an endorsement in middle school teaching in their second major content area (e.g., Spanish, math, etc.). Our first elementary school clinical placement in art will take place at Lake Forest District 67's Sheridan School.

We are delighted to add this endorsement to our teacher education programs. For questions, please contact Shelley Sherman.
