Economics-Business Internships Course Requirements

  • Ten Weekly Journals [30 points based on content and punctuality.Journal topics might include:

For the FIRST 10 WEEKS submit a typed/printed journal weekly, two full double-spaced typed pages, via EMAIL. Due 5 p.m. on Mondays, reflecting on the work of the preceding week. Late journals are accepted, ONLY until the following Friday at noon and receive fewer points.

Journal topics might include:

What new skills you are learning.
Connections between work experience and theoretical learning in classes.
Opportunities for innovation and creativity in your working environment.
Perceptions and insights about the corporate/business environment.
What you are learning overall about living and working in the business world.

  • Seminar Meetings [12 points]

Monthly Seminar meetings to discuss specific aspects of the internship experience. Dates: Tuesday evenings, 7:00-8:00 p.m. Turn in Weekly Time Sheets (initialed by supervisors) at Seminars.

  • Working Hours [mandatory to receive credit]

Work 300 hours/semester for a 2-credit internship. Internship Supervisors must initial your Weekly Time Sheet. Time Sheets are due at each Seminar Meeting. No intern may work for a company owned by a family member, or be supervised by a family member or anyone working under a family member.

  • Research Project Proposal and Preliminary Bibliography [8 points].

 

  • Final Research Paper [44 points]

Write a ten-page paper or project which must include a research component (at least 10 articles/books) and relate the responsibilities of the internship to course work.

  • Internship Evaluation [6 points]

Submit a two-page evaluation of your internship, along with your final paper. This evaluation should be written to help future students assess the value of this internship for their interests.

  • Grading

Internships are graded on a credit-D-fail basis. In order to receive a credit grade, you must:

      • Submit a 2-page journal entry during the first 10 weeks of the semester. [30 points based on content and punctuality].
      • Attend monthly Seminar meetings. [12 points]
      • Submit a final research paper/project of "C" quality or better by the specified due date. [8 pts/proposal and 44 points/project]
      • Submit a two-page evaluation of the internship. [6 points]
      • Work the required number of hours and receive a passing evaluation from your supervisor.

If these conditions are not satisfied, no credit will be issued for the internship.
