Internship Guidelines

In order to participate in an internship, the student must:
  1. Have fulfilled the pre-requisites for doing an Econ-Business internship:

    • Must have a C or better average in all Econ-Business classes (including a C- or better in Econ 110).

    • Must have completed one course from the following list which is relevant to the internship:

      Any Marketing class
In the combination of Econ 110 and any of these Econ-Business courses, must have earned an average of C or better.

    • Must be a Junior or Senior in good standing. No student on academic probation may do an internship.

  2. Decide on a specific area of business such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, or general business.

Go through the internship files in the Career Development Center to find a company that offers work that will allow you to learn the skills you are seeking to develop.

If you have a personal connection enabling you to interview for an internship, follow that lead.

Please let the Director of Economics-Business internships know who you are contacting, so that you can be placed on the list of potential internship students.
    1. Internships in companies owned by family members are not allowed.
    2. Continuations of part-time or summer jobs are not allowed.
    3. The Internship Supervisor may not be a family member or anyone working under a family member.
  3. Write a resume. Get help in the Career Development Center to help you with this process.

  4. Write a cover letter explaining why you are interested in doing an internship.

  5. If you would like to discuss specific internship possibilities, make an appointment to see the Director of Econ-Business Internships, Cathy Benton.

  6. Send resume and cover letter to companies with whom you would like to intern. Sometimes this contact is best made first by phone or email. Address a specific person when possible.

  7. Call and set up a time for an interview.

  8. When you are offered an internship, ask your supervisor for a letter of appointment stating that you have been asked to intern and listing the responsibilities you will have in this internship position. This letter of appointment must be:
    1. written on company letterhead.
    2. signed by the intern's direct supervisor.

  9. When you have completed this process and have a confirmed internship, make an appointment to see the Director, Cathy Benton. Bring to this meeting your letter of appointment. At this meeting, you will complete the necessary forms for the registrar, and sign a contract agreeing to fulfill your responsibilities as an intern.

  10. In order to receive academic credit for the internship, all students must take to the Registrar:
