Economics and Business
The Department of Economics and Business is the largest department at Lake Forest College, offering majors and minors in both economics and business. Students are allowed to have a double major at the College, but they may not major in both business and economics, nor may they major and minor within the same department. Recent graduates of the department have taken jobs at Accenture, ABN AMRO, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Millenium Financial, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, PricewaterhouseCoopers, UBS Financial, and many others. Our graduates have also gone on to law school at places like Harvard, Vanderbilt, and Loyola. Still others went to graduate school at Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern, Syracuse, and Wisconsin. In 2006, one graduate received a Fulbright Fellowship to continue her research on German reunification in Berlin.
Our economics and business programs are both designed to be challenging, teach critical thinking, and meet the demands of a rapidly changing job market. The major in economics is a strong traditional program with a reputation for rigor, depth, and breadth. The business major is structured to provide an overview of various business operations (accounting, finance, and marketing), with an emphasis on the economic environment of business and on analytical and communication skills. Both majors provide a strong background for business careers and for graduate education in economics (M.A. or Ph.D.), business (M.B.A. or Ph.D.), and law (J.D.). Our majors also provide an excellent preparation for careers in the public and not-for-profit sectors or for professional schools in public administration and public policy.
The teaching and research interests of our faculty are wide and varied. Since just 2000, our faculty have published in the Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Urban Economics, National Tax Journal, Economics Letters, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Land Economics, Oxford Review of Economic Policy, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Berkeley Economic and Policy Analysis Electronic Journal, Journal of Sports Economics, Social Choice and Welfare, Contemporary Economic Policy, and many others. We have also contributed several chapters to edited books and have been interviewed by the local, national, and international media such as the New York Times, BBC, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Financial Times, The Economist, Business Week, and the Chicago Tribune.
