Kenneth Weik Biography
For 34 years, Kenneth Weik was a mainstay of the biology department, even contributing after his retirement to teach some undergraduate courses and to participate in a graduate seminar on public policy and the environment. Professor Weik achieved his doctorate in botany from Southern Illinois University, where his dissertation, "A Revision of the Genus Phacus Dujardin in Illinois," secured his expertise in freshwater algae native to Illinois. It was this interest that would be the focus of many of his publications and much of his teachings. And, in an extracurricular mode, he put his knowledge to great use locally by organizing and supporting projects to restore native plants and trees to our campus, where, too, for many years he served as faculty advisor of the colleges Beta Beta Beta National Biology Honorary. For all his regional orientations, Professor Weik’s algae studies took him and his students as far as San Salvador Island in the Bahamas and the United Emirates. Near or far, his life continues to be one committed to nature.
