American Studies
American Studies, the oldest interdisciplinary major in American higher education, examines the relations among institutions, ideas, and the artistic imagination within the American experience. The student acquires a command of the history, literature, and political institutions of the United States and chooses, according to interest, additional studies among the allied fields of art, music, philosophy, religion, sociology, and economics. The aim of the program is not merely for the student to collect course offerings related to the United States from various departments, but to be able to synthesize the American experience through multiple methods of inquiry.
