Asian Studies
The major in Asian Studies is designed so that students may focus on the geographical and topical area of their interest. Asian Studies classes are offered in history, philosophy, politics, religion, sociology, anthropology, and the languages of China and Japan. Because the study of Asia is approached through a variety of academic disciplines, an Asian Studies major allows students considering careers in business, education, communications, international relations, and economics to focus their work in these disciplines on specific areas of Asia.
The Lake Forest College Asian Studies Program is a longtime member of ASIANetwork, a consortium offering programs for students and faculty in Asia, and the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) which provides study abroad programs in India and Japan. We also collaborate in programming with Chicago area institutions such as the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations and the Chicago consulates of Asian nations.
Asian Studies students are encouraged to study in Asia. Lake Forest College sponsors two programs in China: the Beijing Program of Asian Studies, hosted at Peking University in Beijing, China, which provides classes and internship opportunities in Beijing; and the spring semester ASIA274 course, 21st Century China, built around a three-week study tour of China in May. These programs, as well as the ACM study abroad programs in Asia, offer Lake Forest College credit and accept Lake Forest College financial aid. Through the College’s agreements with other institutions, Asian Studies students may also participate in a variety of other study abroad options sponsored throughout Asia.
