W. Rand Smith > Biographical Sketch
W. Rand Smith has taught politics at Lake Forest since 1977. His regular courses include Western European politics, Latin American politics, and U.S. Energy and Environmental Policy, as well as a First Year Studies course on American roots music. His research publications, which include two books and many articles, have focused on politics and political economy in France, Italy, and Spain. He is currently working on a book comparing relations between Socialist and Communist parties in these countries.
A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Prof. Smith received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. In addition to his teaching duties, he has also served as associate dean of the faculty (1995-2000) and interim provost and dean of the faculty (2004-05).
