Amanda Mertens Campbell ‘99
Legislative counsel advises U.S. Congress on energy issuesAmanda had numerous academic interests as a Lake Forest College student, so when Professor of English Ben Goluboff suggested that she major in American Studies, it seemed like the perfect fit. With that major, Amanda was able to take classes that crossed several disciplines, including economics, politics, education, history, and religion.
Although her major focused on the United States, Amanda chose to study abroad in the Czech Republic, then a nascent democracy. “To be exposed to that and gain knowledge of their struggles as they found their footing was an incredible opportunity,” she says.

What to study:
At Lake Forest, you can participate in experience-intensive internships and meet with alumni mentors in your field of interest. The Pre-Law Advising Program supports students who are considering the field of law as a career goal and assists them in the often daunting law school application process.
Dual-degree programs with Loyola University School of Law, Vermont Law School, and Chicago-Kent School of Law allow motivated students to get a law degree one year earlier than a standard curriculum.
Students go on to law school at some of the country's best universities, including:
- Duke University
- Georgetown University
- Harvard University
- Vanderbilt University
