Railroad Photography Workshop at Lake Forest College

Lake Forest, Ill.—The second annual conference on railroad photography, “Conversations about Photography,” will be held at Lake Forest College on Saturday, March 20, in Meyer Auditorium, located in Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus. The workshop, co-sponsored by the Center for Railroad Photography and Art and the Lake Forest College Library Archives and Special Collections, will feature presentations by multiple speakers, a review of Lake Forest’s extensive railroad photography collection, and a reception to announce the winner of an annual photography prize.

The conference begins at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments available beginning at 8:30 a.m. The registration fee is $50, which includes refreshments, luncheon, the reception, and parking. Registration forms are available at www.railphoto-art.org. For more information, please call 847-735-5064.

Guest presenters will include Anne Lyden, assistant curator of photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, who will speak about the exhibition and book “Railroad Vision: Photography, Travel, and Perception.” William D. Middleton, a transportation and engineering historian, will discuss the process of making black and white photographs in the 1950s and 1960s. Mel Patrick, a prominent photographer from Denver, will focus on multimedia programs. Joel Jensen, a classic railroad photographer from Santa Barbara, will speak on “Representations of Railroad Work…Present.” Photographers David Plowden and John Gruber will present a presentation on steam-era photographers. Mark Hemphill, editor of the monthly Trains since 2000, will speak on photography for publication. Arthur Miller, archivist and librarian for special collections at Lake Forest College, and Joe Stupar, 2003 graduate of Lake Forest College, will give brief presentations on the library’s collections and an independent North Shore Line photography simulation.

Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,300 students representing 46 states and 50 other countries.
