Argentine Writer Speaks on
Globalization and Literature in Latin America

Lake Forest, Ill.— Argentine writer Ana Maria Shua will deliver the annual Latin American Studies lecture at Lake Forest College on Wednesday, March 17 at 4 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium. The topic of her talk is "Globalization and Literature in Latin America." The lecture is free and open to the public. Meyer Auditorium is located in Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus and is handicap accessible. Please call 847-735-5276 for more information.

Ana Maria Shua was born in Buenos Aires in 1951. At age sixteen she published her first book The Sun and I, and was awarded two literary prizes for it. Since then she has written sixteen books and has worked in publicity, journalism and as a screenwriter. Her first novel Soy Paciente (Patient), received the Losada Prize. She also writes "sudden fiction," very short stories, such as her collection, Casa de Geishas (House of Geishas) and children's stories. Her children's literature has won many prizes and has been published and translated in many countries. Her recent book of short stories Como una buena madre (Like a Good Mother) relates in a satirical vein the trials and tribulations of motherhood. Her nineteen-year-old daughter Paloma Fabrykant's bestseller of 2002, Como ser madre de una hija adolescente escrito por una hija adolescente (How to Raise an Adolescent Daughter Written by an Adolescent Daughter) promises to uphold the family tradition.

Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,300 students representing 46 states and 50 other countries.
