Lake Forest, Ill.—Martha Greenblatt, a leading solid-state chemist and professor of chemistry at Rutgers University, will deliver the 18th Annual Volwiler Distinguished Scientist Lecture at Lake Forest College on Monday, March 29 at 8 p.m. in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, located on the College’s Middle Campus. The lecture, titled “The Beauty and Fascination of Solids,” is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 847-735-6010. In 2003, Greenblatt was awarded the prestigious American Chemical Society's Francis P. Garvan-John M. Olin Medal, awarded annually to female chemists who have made significant achievements in chemistry. Greenblatt was honored for her remarkable achievements in uncovering and developing new compounds which have the potential for a broad range of applications from computer chips to sensors to generating alternative power. Her research has taken two directions: solid-state materials, in which electrons move, and solid compounds in which ions, or electrically charged atoms, actually move. Some of the metallic solid-state materials she investigates are semiconductors like those that have driven computers ever smaller and more powerful. But her ion-shuffling solids can yield broad applications as well, such as sensors. She now works in the area of electronic materials, including fuel cells, which are used for alternative power generation. Greenblatt escaped her native Hungary in 1956, at the age of 15. She eventually relocated to Brooklyn, where she earned her B.S. at Brooklyn College and her Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. She has been on the faculty of Rutgers University since 1974 where she is a Board of Governors Professor of Chemistry, the highest level of professorship at Rutgers. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of Material Research Bulletin and is a mentor to science students who hope to pursue Ph.D. degrees, which she considers one of the most satisfying parts of her job. Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,300 students representing 46 states and 50 other countries.
