Global Issues Symposium

Lake Forest, Ill.—The Global Issues Symposium will be held at Lake Forest College from February 19–25, all events are open to the public. The Symposium, an annual event at the College, provides an opportunity for cross-cultural reflection for students and the community through a series of lectures and presentations. In addition to guest speakers lecturing on timely topics of international significance, student panels present their international experiences and discuss their newly acquired understanding of global citizenship and cross-cultural differences.


· Thursday, February 19, Ambassador J.D. Bindenagel, director of program for the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, will give a talk titled “Conflict Diamonds: The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme” at 6:30 p.m. in Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, located on the College’s Middle Campus. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. Admission is $20 for Chicago Council of Foreign Relations members, $30 for nonmembers, and free for Lake Forest College students, faculty, and staff.

· Monday, February 23, Maria Velez de Berlinder, president of Latin Trade Solutions,Inc. will speak on the connection between food supply and worldwide food distribution with the U.S. Bioterrorism act. Her talk titled “Food, Security, and Nutritional Needs” will be held at 7 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium, located in Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus. Admission is free.

· Tuesday, February 24, a panel of Lake Forest College students will discuss their international experiences at 4 p.m. in Durand Art Institute, Room 209, located on the College’s North Campus. Reception to follow. Admission is free. Photos also on display.

· Wednesday, February 25, Dr. Elizabeth Fernea, author, filmmaker, and expert on Middle Eastern women and family will speak on “Iraqi Women: Then and Now” at 7:30 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium, located in Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus. Admission is free.


The Global Issues Symposium is sponsored by the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, Lake Forest College Latin American Studies Program, Lake Forest College Asia Interest Group, and the Christopher C. Mojekwu Fund for Intercultural Understanding. For more information, please contact 847-735-6010.
