Martin Luther King Jr.
Celebration and 75th Birthday Observance


Lake Forest, Ill – Lake Forest College invites the public to attend a celebration in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., on Monday, January 19 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel. The public is invited to attend free of charge. The Chapel is located at the corner of College and Sheridan roads in Lake Forest. For more information please call 847-735-6010.

Keynote speaker Dr. John Webster Smith will deliver a talk titled “Why King Still Matters—Advice and Commentary for a New Generation.” The celebration includes a performance by the College’s Gospel Choir, Voices of the World, and readings and remarks from students and College President Stephen D. Schutt.

Dr. Smith, a professor of speech communication and Director of Graduate Education at Ohio University, is also a minister, singer, recording artist, composer, and activist. Blind since birth, Smith has spent his life overcoming adversity. When he was three, doctors said he wouldn’t live to the age of four, but prayers and a miracle kept him alive and on his way to a rich life. His spiritual journey includes becoming a professional gospel singer at the age of thirteen. He’s been singing and speaking in churches across the country since the age of fourteen. His recording, “One Day,” includes his own compositions, and he is currently recording a CD of gospel songs.

Dr. Smith’s career as a scholar includes receiving his B.A. in history and speech from Indiana University, his M.A in speech from Purdue University, and his Ph.D. in Communication from Wayne State University. Dr. Smith completed his doctoral degree while still in his twenties. He has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies at Ohio University, where he is a tenured professor. His scholarly writings include articles on African American communication and a book on political communication, Communication and Campaigns.

Lake Forest College is a private liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,300 students representing 46 states and 50 other countries.
