Book Talk by Franz Schulze Lake Forest, Ill.—Franz Schulze will discuss his new book Chicago’s Famous Buildings, fifth edition, on Friday, December 5 at 4 p.m. in the Pierson Rooms at Lake Forest College. Schulze is the Betty Jane Schultz Hollender Professor of Art, Emeritus, at Lake Forest College. The public is invited to attend the book talk free of charge. Chicago’s Famous Buildings has long been regarded as the premier guide to the city’s architectural riches. Franz Schulze and Kevin Harrington have produced a completely revised and updated fifth edition, ensuring that this publication will continue to serve residents and tourists as the leading pocket guide to Chicago architecture. Chicago’s Famous Buildings, fifth edition, University of Chicago Press, (2003), covers more than a decade of extraordinary new architecture and takes a fresh look back at the city's classical legacy of Adler, Sullivan, Burnham, Root, Wright, and Mies van der Rohe. The authors have added many new descriptions and images of the most important projects in Chicago since the fourth edition. The new book includes descriptions of Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods along with new maps for walking tours and more than sixty new photographs. Franz Schulze served on the faculty of Lake Forest College from 1952 until his retirement in 1991. He received his Ph.B. degree from the University of Chicago, and his B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Schulze served as chief art critic for the Chicago Daily News from 1962-78, and for the Chicago Sun-Times from1978-85. He is a contributing editor to Art News (since1978) and is a corresponding editor for Art in America, (since 1975). Schulze is the author of numerous books including; Fantastic Images: Chicago Art Since 1945, Follett Publishers (1972); Mies van der Rohe: A Critical Biography, University of Chicago Press (1985); Philip Johnson: Life and Work, Alfred A. Knopf (1994); with Prof. Rosemary Cowler and Dr. Arthur Miller, Thirty Miles North, Lake Forest College (2000); editor, Mies van der Rohe: Critical Essays, MIT Press (1989); editor, volumes 7-20, Mies van der Rohe Archive, Garland Publishers (1993); co-editor with Prof. Kevin Harrington, Chicago's Famous Buildings, University of Chicago Press, 4th edition, (1993). The book talk is sponsored by the Lake Forest College Donnelley Library. Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago.
