The Nature of Desire:
Toward an Environmental History of American Consumerism

Lake Forest, Ill.— Matthew W. Klingle, assistant professor of history and environmental studies at Bowdoin College, will present a lecture titled, “The Nature of Desire: Toward an Environmental History of American Consumerism,” on Wednesday, November 19 at 4 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium, located in Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus. Klingle earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California-Berkeley and completed his graduate studies at the University of Washington. His doctoral dissertation, “Urban by Nature: An Urban History of Seattle: 1880-1970,” was recognized in 2002 by the Urban History Association with its annual outstanding dissertation award. He is a co-primary investigator on an environmental studies research project funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.

The lecture is co-sponsored by Lake Forest College’s Program in American Studies, Program in Environmental Studies, and Department of History.
