Renowned Artist Kerry James Marshall to Speak at Lake Forest College

Lake Forest, Ill.--Artist Kerry James Marshall, whose work is currently the featured exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, will present a lecture about his work at Lake Forest College on Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus. The talk is free and open to the public. For more information please contact 847-735-6010.

A painter, photographer, printmaker and installation artist, Marshall’s work is based on a broad range of art-historical references, from Renaissance painting to black folk art, from El Greco to Charles White. His work is included in the collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery and the Los Angeles County Museum. His work has been featured at Documenta 10, the Whitney Biennial (1997), and the 2000 Carnegie International. Marshall was the recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation award in 1997, and has been a professor at the School of Art and Design, and the University of Illinois at Chicago since 1993.

The subject matter of Marshall’s work is often drawn from African American popular culture and has roots in the locales of his upbringing. “You can’t be born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955 and grow up in South Central [Los Angeles] near the Black Panthers headquarters, and not feel like you’ve got some kind of social responsibility. You can’t move to Watts in 1963 and not speak about it. That determined a lot of where my work was going to go,” he said in an interview with PBS in 2001 for the award-winning series “Art: 21.”

Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The college has 1,330 students representing 46 states and 50 other countries.
