Lake Forest College Hosts Congress to Campus Program

Lake Forest, Ill.— Are the college-age youth of today interested and educated about public service and its role in democracy? Are we at risk of losing the well informed and educated leaders we need to fill the many elected and appointed positions at all levels of government?

As part of the national Congress to Campus Program, two former members of congress will spend two and half days at Lake Forest College discussing the importance of public service in a democratic society to help students understand why they should be concerned about and involved in public affairs. The Congress to Campus Program sends bipartisan pairs of former Members of Congress – one Democrat and one Republican – to visit college and university campuses around the country. Bruce Morrison, D-CT, and Ronald A. Sarasin, R-CT, will visit Lake Forest College on November 3, 4 and 5. Lake Forest College is one of 30 campuses nationwide paricipating in the proagram this year (2003-04)and the the only one in Illinois.

While on campus, the former congressmen will visit and speak in classes such as America and the War on Terrorism, The Presidency, Major Ethical Theories, Foundations of the American Republic, and Health Care Issues in the United States; they will speak to student organizations; meet informally with students; gather with local political officials; and preside over an open forum to which the community is invited. The open public forum will be held on Tuesday, November 4 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in McCormick Auditorium. For more information call 847-735-6010.
