Lake Forest College to Host National Debate Forum

Lake Forest, Ill.—Lake Forest College will be one of five locations in Illinois to host the nationally-organized debate, “The People Speak: America Debates Its Role in the World,” on Thursday, October 23 and Thursday, October 30. The debates will take place in Meyer Auditorium, located in Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.

Sixteen national organizations, led by the UN Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF), and the Open Society Institute, have organized the national conversation on American foreign policy in light of recent events. The forums are free and open to the public. For more information please call 847-735-6010.

The topics of debate will be:

·Thursday, October 23- 4 pm- Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall
“The People Speak Forum on the U.S Commitment to International Law and Cooperation” That the United States should demonstrate a stronger commitment to international institutions and international laws.

·Thursday, October 30 -- 8 pm - Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall
“The People Speak Forum on the Preemptive Use of Force by the U.S.” That the United States should use military force preemptively to meet the threats posed by hostile nations and groups seeking to acquire nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.

This debate series offers an opportunity for Americans nationwide to discuss crucial aspects of foreign policy in their communities. As world events have unfolded recently, millions of Americans have witnessed U.S. involvement in reconstruction, peacekeeping, multilateralism, and pre-emption, but have not had the opportunity to discuss these issues with their fellow citizens. “We are at a critical moment for U.S. foreign policy – and for American democracy. The crucial global policy decisions that face this country must be influenced by an informed and engaged public. This initiative gives Americans a voice,” said Stephen B. Heintz, President of RBF.

Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The college has 1,330 students representing 46 states and 50 other countries.
