Lake Forest, Ill.—Lake Forest College and the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations (CCFR) will sponsor a lecture by Dr. Kurt Biedenkopf, former minister-president of Saxony, Germany, titled “U.S.-Europe Relations: The Road Ahead” on Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, located on the College’s Middle Campus. Biedenkopf has played a major role in shaping the German political landscape for over 30 years and is a leading expert in transatlantic issues as well as in the effects of globalization and demographic changes on the Germany economy. Twice elected to the Bundestag (1976-80 and 1987-90), Dr. Biedenkopf was voted minister-president of Saxony in 1990, where he played a crucial role in modernizing the eastern German state until the end of his tenure in 2002. He also served as the secretary general of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 1973 until his appointment as deputy chairman of the national party in 1977. He received his doctorate and master’s degree in law from Georgetown University. The lecture will examine the relationship between the United States and European nations and the divisions that exist and have come to light during the debates over Iraq. While the Bush administration has made clear its willingness to use preemptive and unilateral responses to perceived foreign threats, the European Union has chosen to empower multilateral institutions, particularly the United Nations, as the only legitimate forum for conflict resolution. How is Europe redefining its role and responsibilities in the conduct of foreign policy today? What is the impact of America’s superpower status on U.S.-Europe relations? What are the prospects for a warming of the U.S.-EU relationship in the months ahead? The lecture will be moderated by the College’s Dean of the Faculty and Provost Steven Galovich. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $15 for CCFR members and $25 for non-members There is no charge for the Lake Forest College Community. For more information please call 847-735-6010. The lecture is co-sponsored by Lake Forest College, the Council’s Konrad Adenauer Program for European Policy Studies and the James S. Kemper Foundation. Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The college has 1,300 students representing 45 states and 43 other countries.
