Illinois Freedom Fighters: A Dedication to the Soldiers of the 29th Infantry, USCT
In Honor of Lt. Colonel John A. Bross


Lake Forest, Ill.—Lake Forest College will host a lecture and dedication ceremony honoring the memory of Lt. Colonel John A. Bross, on Monday April 14 at 2 p.m. in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel on the College’s Middle Campus, near the intersection of College and Sheridan roads. The public is welcome to attend free of charge. For more information please call 847-735-6010.

Bross was the Regimental Commander of the 29th Infantry, USCT, an Illinois Regiment of African American troops during the Civil War, he died heading his troops at the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, Virginia. To honor his memory Dr. Dorothy Drinkard-Hawkshawe, professor of history and director of the African American Studies Program at East Tennessee State University, will deliver a lecture titled, “Illinois Freedom Fighters: A Dedication to the Soldiers of the 29th Infantry, USCT.”

A reception will take place in the Abbott Common Room in Deerpath Hall on the College’s North Campus following the lecture. A plaque honoring Bross will be placed in the Courtyard outside Deerpath Hall.

Drinkard-Hawkshawe is the author of Illinois Freedom Fighters: A Civil War Saga of the 29th Infantry, USCT and is currently writing a biography of James L. Farmer, a civil rights leader in the 1960s and founder of Congress for Racial Equality (CORE).

Drinkard-Hawkshawe is in the process of revising her book Illinois Freedom Fighters to include additional information on others who served in the 29th Infantry. Anyone who would like to share information with her may contact her at 423-439-6688 or drinkard@access.etsu.edu
