Students Display Diverse Talents at Lake Forest College

Lake Forest, Ill.-—Lake Forest College will celebrate its students’ academic achievements by sponsoring its sixth annual Student Symposium on April 8, from 8:30 a.m.-– 4:30 p.m. Throughout the day students will present the best of their work in a variety of venues and forums.

The public is welcome to attend and admission is free. A Symposium Welcome Center will operate that day from 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. in Young Hall, on Middle Campus, located at the corner of College and Sheridan Roads in Lake Forest. More information can be found on our Web site at www.lakeforest.edu/symposium/ or call 847-735-5121.

“This annual event is a highlight of the academic year at Lake Forest College and illustrates the breadth and depth of our intellectual community. Students from every academic discipline present the fruits of many hours of research and scholarship to audiences of their peers and mentors in a truly inspiring display of talent,” says Stephen D. Schutt, president of Lake Forest College.

Presentations will cover a wide variety of academic disciplines. Students will present research papers and creative projects about current events, historical and literary debates and social issues. Will there ever be an Free Trade Area of the Americas? Would a Flat Tax reduce tax avoidance and evasion? Are web services used simply for marketing purposes? Does growing up in either a rural area or an urban area affect drug use? These important issues will be discussed by students in panels and individual presentations moderated by Lake Forest faculty.

The research in physics, biology, and chemistry, as well the work of student social scientists shows the same ambitious approach to important contemporary questions. Mate discrimination in female guppies, new techniques in holography, and the possible genetic links of schizophrenia are just a few of the panel and poster presentations. Sociology/anthropology and psychology students will present their research on topics such as the affect of the loss of a sibling on young adults, educational adjustment of Hispanic students, possible correlations between birth order and intelligence.

Students will reevaluate past world leaders, and other prominent members of the world arena and their impacts on the world: Hitler’s influence on Mussolini’s anti-Semitic practices; Stalin, Truman and the causes of the Cold War; analysis of American presidents’ policies toward the Arab-Israeli question. Many other issues relevant to current events will be examined.

In the arts there will be presentations, performances, and exhibits, which should prove to be equally stimulating. There will be a recital held in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel showcasing the musical talents of students. Music papers cover a variety of topics, from the role of music in Shakespeare’s plays to music and emotions. In Durand Art Institute, there will be exhibits and presentations in various media, including, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, digital imaging, and mixed media.

Of particular interest to Lake Forest residents: a student examines the life and writings of Frances Wells Shaw, wife of Howard Van Doren Shaw. Another students examines the produce delivery service of an Italian immigrant in Lake Forest from 1920 -– 1930.

Beyond the classroom, real life experiences through internships and study abroad as well as student teaching, provides the inspiration and basis for some Lake Forest student research. From the economics department comes innovative research on child labor in several South and Central American countries, poverty and welfare reform in the United States, and Social Security for twenty-year-olds. Student teachers discuss their experiences at Warren Township High School.

Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The college has 1,300 students representing 45 states and 43 other countries.
